Instructions for preparation of the oral contrast and when to drink prior to the scan will be given to the patient

If your patient is or may be pregnant please discuss alternative imaging or delay the CT until there is a negative pregnancy test.

The CT usually takes 20 to 30 minutes.
Intravascular contrast medium may be required. This injection is administered by intravenous bolus under the supervision of the Radiologist.

Barium can cause mild constipation so you may wish to recommend increased consumption of water and fibre food for up to seven days after the examination.


The Radiologist may give the patient a preliminary result at the end of the examination, but the images will be reviewed and formal interpretation will be forwarded to you.
