This examination is performed as a pre surgical procedure to localise an area of concern such as a a small lump or calcification seen on a mammogram.
Pre Examination
This procedure is usually performed on the morning of the surgical appointment and requires 40 - 60 minutes.
A wire localisation may be performed under mammographic or ultrasound control.
The patient will go from the Radiology Practice to the Surgical Clinic or Hospital.
The Examination
The procedure is performed under sterile conditions and local anaesthetic. If your patient is allergic to skin preparation solution please indicate this on the Referral.
When the needle is correctly located, a fine wire is threaded through the localising needle and the needle withdrawn. This wire remains in the breast to mark the area for the surgeon.The hook at the end of the wire keeps it secure and the outer end of the wire is taped onto the breast.
Post Examination
The patient goes to the Hospital or Surgical Unit
Following the excision the tissue sample may be x-rayed, and the area of concern marked for the Pathologist.
The pathology results may take up to five working days before they are available.
